MM00EC30 Classical Music Analysis (5 cr)

Objectives I can analyze tonal and post-tonal music both by ear and via score-reading. I recognize different musical forms and I can analyze their structures, harmony and the techniques used by the composer. I can describe the melodic motive phenomena of music and phenomena related to tonality. I recognize characteristics from which a unified musical entity emerges, as well as stylistic features that connect with specific cultural-historical context. I understand harmony, form and style analysis as a tool for building my own musical expression.
Content - Understanding musical structures; Understanding how the musical entity forms in a piece; Identifying the significant moments of the piece and observing the structure the music (e.g. related to texture, chords, homophony or polyphony, repeating gestures and structures); Tonal functions; Reading score (e.g. key, cadences, modulations); Musical textures (e.g. harmonic and inharmonic tones); Assessment of need for analytical precision. The course focuses on the history of Western music, especially on the music of 17th and 19th centuries.

Evaluation Criteria

The assessment (pass/fail) is based on doing homework and final course assignment.

Passed: Through their own assignment portfolio and a broader course assignment, the student demonstrates that they have learned to credibly analyze different tonal and post-tonal repertoire. In the student's analyses, both broader musical entities and individual musical phenomena have been outlined, and the interrelationships of the phenomena have been recognized. The student knows how to analyze works on multiple levels and credibly justify different interpretations. The student knows how to use analysis as a tool for interpreting musical pieces and as a pedagogical tool.
