MM00EB81 Introduction to Classical Harmony and Voice-Leading (3 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives I can write voice-leading in a polyphonic tonal harmony, imitating classical and romantic style. I understand what voice-leading refers to, and I can apply this principle to my own harmony-writing exercises. I understand how chords and melodic lines relate to each other in classical voice-leading, and I master the most common voicing and lines of this style.
Content - Writing melody lines in specific style: Melodic tendencies of major and minor scales; Forbidden movements in melody; Phrasal thinking and musical climax; Balancing leaps and scale movements; Balancing ascending and descending lines; Melodic ranges
- Introduction to voice-leading; Writing harmonies with main chords (I-IV-V); First inversion chords; Cadential fourth-sixth chord; Dominant chord; Substituted II and VI; III and VII, and their inversions; Major and minor 7th chords, diminshed 7th chords; V and VII intermediate dominants
