OE00DX50 Advanced Level Prehospital Emergency Care and Emergency Medicine I (6 cr)
Prerequisites Successfully completed (or equivalent competence):
- All courses in basic level prehospital emergency care studies and proficiency examination in basic level prehospital emergency care (includes pre-requisites for the courses)
- Accident and Emergency Care 5 cr (includes pre-requisites for the course)
Objectives 1) Act as a paramedic 2 in accordance with the duties, responsibilities, treatment guidelines and principles of paramedic emergency care at advanced level
2) Understand the decision-making processes and influencing factors at the consultative level.
3) Be able to perform advanced level paramedic care and interventions in accordance with patient and workplace safety.
4) Can anticipate changes in patient condition and potential complications.
5) Identifies competencies and areas for improvement.
Content 1) Responsibilities and obligations of the advanced level paramedic.
2) Working as a leader and paramedic 2 roles in advanced level emergency care scenes.
3) Advanced level prehospital emergency care guidelines, medications and procedures.
4) Application of emergency medicine in the emergency care of sick and injured patients.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

Execution methods I will attend an orientation day on emergency care at the advanced level.
I will learn about the care guidelines, medication and procedures of paramedicine through pre-recorded materials, exercises and mobile simulator tasks.
I will practice advanced level emergency care procedures in skills lab.
I actively practice working in the roles of paramedic 1 and 2 in simulation exercises and evaluate my own and my team's performance in debriefing sessions.
I participate in advanced level emergency care workshops.
I demonstrate my competence in mobile simulator tasks, simulations and medical and paramedical exams.
Materials Advanced level prehospital care textbooks, regional care guidelines and video lectures of emergency medicine.

The Student
- knows the deadlines and time windows related to emergency care
- examines the patient at the level of care and participates in making the working diagnosis and treatment of the patient based on the most severe symptom (minimum role H2)
- identifies deteriorating patients and a patients with life-threatening symptoms
- participates in making treatment decisions
- administrates drugs used in prehospital care safely at the level of care
- participates in the assessment of the overall condition, prognosis and effectiveness of treatment of the emergency patient
- complies with CRM principles
- justifies the choice of the place of follow-up care
- plans the care of a patient during ambulance transport, taking into account the patient's condition, prognosis, circumstances and distance to the final place of care.
- when requesting treatment instructions, reports relevant information to the emergency physician in accordance with the ISBAR model
- records and reports relevant information for the continuation of the patient's care to the place of onward care in accordance with the ISBAR model

The Student

- justifies the choice of the place of follow-up care
- plans the care of a patient during ambulance transport, taking into account the patient's condition, prognosis, circumstances and distance to the final place of care.
- when requesting treatment instructions, reports relevant information to the emergency physician in accordance with the ISBAR model
- records and reports relevant information for the continuation of the patient's care to the place of onward care in accordance with the ISBAR model

The Student

- takes responsibility for the examination and makes working diagnosis of patient at the level of care and for the treatment of patients on the basis of the most serious symptom (H2 and H1 as appropriate).

- can safely administrate drugs used in prehospital care appropriate to the level of care
- takes responsibility for assessing the overall condition, prognosis and effectiveness of treatment of the emergency patient
- anticipates risks, prepares for complications and makes correct/justified decisions when they occur.
- takes responsibility for the implementation of common principles of care and risk management.
- understands the big picture and makes informed decisions quickly in critical situations.
- justifies the choice of a place of follow-up care on the basis of reliable evidence
- plans the care of a patient during ambulance transport, taking into account the patient's condition, prognosis, circumstances and distance to the final place of care.
- justifies the decision not to transport and guides the patient in accessing further care and self-care.
- when requesting treatment instructions, communicates the necessary information to the emergency physician in accordance with the ISBAR model.
- takes responsibility for recording care
- communicates relevant information to the point of follow-up in accordance with the ISBAR model.
