OE00DX32 Basics of Prehospital Emergency Care (7 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites.
Objectives The student
1) understands the key concepts, ethical principles, legislation of emergency care and describes the structure of the emergency care service system.
2) understands the basics of pair and teamwork and meaning of professional communication in emergency care.
3) can assess patient systematically and implement emergency care at the first responder level.
4) uses emergency medical examination, patient handling and treatment equipment complying with patient and occupational safety.
5) identifies his/her competencies and areas for development.
Content 1) Job description and general competence requirements for paramedics.
2) Key concepts, legislation and structure of emergency care services system.
3) Ethics in paramedicine.
4) Examination, patient handling and treatment equipment in emergency care.
5) Fundamentals of safe pair and teamwork in emergency care and professional interaction.
6) Systematic patient assessment and the five-step patient encounter model.
7) Patient care at first responder level.
8) Giving and receiving feedback.

Execution methods Learning about the content areas of the course by studying theoretical knowledge under the guidance of a teacher, independently and in groups.

The student
- describe the main concepts, ethical principles, legislation and service system of emergency care
- know the main stages in the development of emergency care
- work flexibly in a team-based approach to emergency care
the division of labour and the principles of work
- performs both paramedic 1 and 2 duties in first response duties
- systematically examines the paramedic patient, makes an initial assessment and determines the urgency of treatment at first response level
- applies the ABCDE, GCS, RiVaLAiSeR memorandum rules appropriately
- performs first response procedures and PPE-D in accordance with patient and workplace safety
- use the most common out-of-hospital first aid equipment appropriately and explain the principles of its operation
- Describes the basic needs and vital signs of the patient/client and related key monitoring and observation techniques with justification
- assess the effectiveness of care interventions and justify their assessment
- reports to the point of follow-up in accordance with the ISBAR model
-participates in the maintenance of care equipment and equipment backpacks
- Distinguish between reliable evidence and opinion and select reliable source material for their learning tasks

You can demonstrate your knowledge of the content of the course by means of a theory test and an operational skills test if you have
1) at least an upper secondary vocational diploma in health (basic level paramedic) or a diploma as a rescuer, which has included studies in paramedic care, and
2) two months of professional experience in the field of prehospital emergency care

An appointment will be made no later than the first week of September with the teacher responsible for the course. The necessary work and study certificates will be stored in Moodle. No application for admission is made via HOT application in Peppi. AHOT performance will be assessed on a pass/fail scale.

If you wish to audit all first and second year paramedic studies, you must have at least one year of work experience in basic level paramedic (ambulance) within the last three years in addition to one of the above qualifications. This is done by completing an assessment of basic level paramedic skills, including a written portfolio of skills, a theory test and practical demonstrations in simulated paramedic situations.

The assessment must always be agreed in advance with the paramedic teacher.
