OE00DY12 Nursing care of children, women and families (4 cr)

Objectives Part I (Pediatric nursing)
The Student has ability to use appropriate nursing interventions in acute care of children, adolescents and their families.
The student knows the specificities of drug treatment for children and adolescents and understands their meaning for medicines and fluids in pediatric nursing.

Part II (Basics of sexual- and reproductive health)
Student
- can assess the need for care and plan, implement and evaluate the care of woman and family during different ages, during pregnancy and post-partum period using evidence-based information. Also care of woman with gynecological problems, family and a newborn.
- knows the characteristics of an unplanned out-of-hospital delivery (OHD)
- knows the relationship of medications, diseases and interventions to human sexuality and sexual- and reproductive health
Content Part I (Child and adolescent nursing) Physical, motor and psycho-social growth and development of children and adolescents of different ages and their support and assessment. The effects of acute or long-term illness on children and young people of different ages and on the family. The nursing process as a professional tool. Play as a method of pediatric nursing. Assessment and treatment of childrens' pain. Specific aspects of pediatric medication.

Part II (Basics of sexual- and reproductive health) Sexual and reproductive health in the life cycle of a woman and a family. Sexuality and sexual councelling in nursing care. Nursing care of women and families during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum periods. Specific aspects of the care of a healthy newborn child. Unplanned out-of-hospital delivery. Specific aspects of medication. Promotion of women's health. Specific features of nursing care for women at different ages.

Accomplishment methods I demonstrate my competence with learning assignments and tests in theory and demonstration tests, as well as in learning situations during practice classes.
Execution methods I develop my competence by acquiring knowledge related to different thematic contents by doing learning assignments and familiarizing myself with the topics independently.
I apply my nursing skills when working in practice and simulation classes.
I demonstrate my competence in the theory exams of the course, in the medication calculation tests and in the proficiency test.

1) Basics of child and adolescent care
- I know some of the diseases, special needs and the importance of hospital care for children, adolescents and their families.
- I understand the principles and characteristics of nursing care for children and adolescents
- I can prescribe medicines for children and understand the specificities of fluid and drug administration in paediatric care
- I can select and implement some clinical interventions for children and adolescents.
- I know methods for assessing and treating pain in children of different ages.
- I know how to resuscitate paediatric patients of different ages.

2)
Student
- Identifies the contents of sexual- and reproductive health issues in client- and counselling situations related to different age groups of women and different life situations of families
- knows the links between individual medications, diseases and interventions and human sexuality and sexual- and reproductive health
- knows and describes the normal monitoring of pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum without any justification and causality.
- knows the principles and specificities of female nursing care and the basics of the gynecological nursing care process.

- Understand the principles, characteristics and process of care of children and young people and apply them to primary care
- Knowledge of paediatric medication bills and understanding of the specificities of fluid and medication management in paediatric nursing.
- Be able to select, justify and implement clinical nursing interventions appropriate to the care of children and young people and evaluate their effects.
- Understand and apply methods for the assessment and management of pain in children of different ages in primary care.
- I can perform CPR on children of different ages.
