OE00DX54 Advanced Level Prehospital Emergency Care and Emergency Medicine II (7 cr)
Prerequisites Successfully completed (or equivalent competence):
- All courses in basic level prehospital emergency care studies and proficiency examination in basic level prehospital emergency care (includes pre-requisites for the courses)
- Accident and Emergency Care 5 cr (includes pre-requisites for the course)
- Nursing care of children, women and families 4 cr
- Client-Centered Elderly Emergency Care 4 cr (includes pre-requisites for the course)
- Mental Health and Addiction Nursing 4 cr
Objectives The student
1) Is able to act as a paramedic 1 in accordance with the duties, responsibilities, treatment guidelines and principles at the advanced level.
2) Is able to be responsible for the care of patients at the scene and during transport to further care, and for recording and reporting on emergency care
3) Can lead a paramedic team
4) Can apply reliable evidence-based research and expert knowledge
5) Is capable to identify his/her competencies and areas for development.
Content 1) Decision-making and accountability and related processes in advanced level out-of-hospital emergency care
2) Assessing the patient's care needs, assessing the need for urgent care, identifying advice and guidance needs in urgent and non-urgent situations
3) Patient care level emergency care at the scene and during transport to further care, Nursing level interventions and medical treatment. Assessment, recording and reporting of care
4) Management of day-to-day and special situations in single and dual unit tasks and in multi-agency cooperation
5) Emergency medicine, critical care medicine and anaesthesiology
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.

Execution methods - The student actively participates in lectures and webinars through discussion.
- The student develops his/her skills through course assignments and a mobile simulator tasks for emergency care.
- The student actively participates in the simulations in different paramedic roles and tasks.
- The student studies and passes the exam in intensive care medicine and anaesthesiology.
Materials Literature of national advanced level prehospital care exam, regional care guidelines and video lectures of emergency medicine.

The student
- can manage emergency care situations in a controlled manner and understand the importance of the duties, responsibilities, medication management regulations, nursing guidelines and principles of nursing as a paramedic 1.
- is able to recognize the importance of conducting an examination and assessing the need and urgency of patient care.
- is able to to make decisions on treatments or not to transport a patient in accordance with current guidelines, or on the basis of consultation, and to guide the patient regarding follow-up and treatment.
- can safely deliver advanced level emergency care to the patient, assess response to treatment and to respond to deterioration in the patient's condition.
-can systematically record and report as instructed and justify the importance of recording and reporting for continuity of car.
- can apply CRM principles when acting as a care team leader and member in both single and multiple primary care unit assignments and in liaison with authorities.
- is able to apply paramedic knowledge to situations requiring emergency care at the level of care and master the basics of the knowledge base of critical care medicine and anaesthesiology

The student

- is able to recognize the importance of conducting an examination and assessing the need and urgency of patient care.
- is capable to make a guided informed decision on treatments or not to transport a patient in accordance with current guidelines, or on the basis of consultation, and to guide the patient regarding follow-up and treatment.
- can safely deliver advanced level care to the patient, assess the response to treatment and the overall situation.
- is able to anticipate the progression of the situation and prepare for deterioration in the patient's condition and record and report systematically according to instructions and justify the importance of recording and reporting for continuity of care.
- can act as a leader and member of the care team in various roles and tasks, in single and multiple emergency department tasks and in liaison with authorities, in accordance with CRM principles.
- is capable to apply paramedic knowledge in situations requiring emergency care and use the knowledge base of critical care medicine and anaesthesiology in situations requiring emergency care.

excellent (5)
The student
- can independently manage emergency care situations and assess the obligations and responsibilities of the paramedic at the advanced level, and analyse the importance of compliance with medication management regulations, treatment guidelines and nursing principles in the patient care process.
- is able to recognise the importance of conducting an examination and assessing the need and urgency of a patient's care
- is able to be responsible for making treatment decisions and not transporting the patient in accordance with current guidelines, or on a consultative basis, and for guiding the patient regarding follow-up and treatment.
- Is able to consider the consequences of his/her decisions for the patient and for ambulance and other emergency services
- is capable to safely provide advanced level emergency care to the patient, assess the response to treatment and the overall situation.
- is able to anticipate the progression of the situation and to prepare for and respond to a deteriorating patient an be responsible for assessing, recording and reporting care and reflect on its relevance to continuity of care and patient safety.
- can evaluate his/her own leadership skills and CRM principles when acting as a leader and member of a emergency care team.
- can analyse his/her performance in different roles and tasks and in single and multiple primary care unit assignments and in liaison with authorities.
- is able to apply his/her knowledge of emergency medicine, critical care medicine and anaesthesiology to situations requiring emergency care at the advanced level level.
