OE00DX47 Clinical Decision Making and Patient Education in Non-urgent Emergency Situations (3 cr)
Prerequisites Pre-requisites: Completed courses (or equivalent competence):
- Clinical Practicum in Basics of Prehospital Emergency Care
- Resuscitation and Management of Critical Situations (incl. this courses prerequisities)
- Nursing of Chronic Diseases
- Surgical Nursing
Objectives The student
1) understands the reporting obligations and rights of paramedics in their work and know how to make these reports.
2) can identify a client with social distress in emergency care and refer them to appropriate services.
3) can identify a client with mental distress in emergency care and refer them to appropriate services.
4) understands the criteria for involuntary treatment under the Mental Health Act and be able to apply them in emergency care.
5) is able to assess the patient's need for care and give patient education in a non-urgent emergency situation.
6) is capable to get familiar with emergency care preparedness, resources and criteria for emergency care and take them into account in decision making and guidance

Further Information Guidelines for the recognition of prior learning (AHOT)

You can demonstrate your knowledge of the content of the course by assignment given by teacher if you have 1) at least a secondary vocational qualification in health (emergency care) or a diploma in rescue work, including studies in emergency care 2) at least 1 year of professional experience in out-of-hospital emergency care (basic level ambulance), which must have been gained within the last 3 years. The student agrees on the demonstration of competences with the course supervisor in the semester preceding the course (no HOT application to Peppi is required).

The student agrees on the demonstration of competence with the teacher responsible for the course in the semester preceding the course. No application for admission is made via HOT application in Peppi. AHOT performance will be assessed on a pass/fail scale.

A request for approval of previous studies is submitted to Peppi if the student has completed similar studies at a higher education institution.

If you wish to audit all first and second year paramedic studies, you must have at least one year of work experience in basic level paramedic (ambulance) within the last three years in addition to one of the above qualifications. This is done by completing an assessment of basic level paramedic skills, including a written portfolio of skills, a theory test and practical demonstrations in simulated paramedic situations.

The assessment must always be agreed in advance with the paramedic teacher.
