Description


ON00DV35 Perioperative Nursing I (5 cr)
Prerequisites Level I and Level II studies are completed without deficits or the student has completed 140 credits of nursing studies and has passed the demonstration of competence in nursing.
Objectives The student is able to:

• master the key knowledge and skills required in the perioperative nurse's work, be able to make decisions, and work independently as a perioperative nurse;
• plan, implement and evaluate perioperative nursing work ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information;
• work as a part of the perioperative team during the phases of the perioperative process;
• evaluate and develop personal skills and professional action in a goal-oriented manner.
Content • Anaesthetic and surgical care of patients across the lifespan in different learning environments
• Vital signs and changes in the perioperative patient
• The nurse's role as a member of the perioperative team at different stages of the care process
• Ethical challenges in the perioperative care process
• Fluid management of the perioperative patient, pain management and other anaesthesia related medication
• Patient safety in perioperative nursing
• Preparation of the operating theatre and instruments for surgery
• Assisting in surgery
• Working in a perioperative team
• Immediate pre-and post-operative care

A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility.

Further Information Students choose their advanced studies in nursing according to their own career plans. Students should familiarise themselves beforehand with the educational and skills requirements that employers have set for nurses in different workplaces.

If the student intends to work in an operating theatre, it is recommended both Perioperative Nursing I and II.

Perioperative Nursing I can be chosen as an elective course.

Information on the selection process and enrolment for advanced studies will be provided in advance.
