Description

ON00DV31	Advanced Surgical Nursing (5 cr)
Prerequisites	Level I and Level II studies are completed without deficits or the student has completed 140 credits of nursing studies and has passed the demonstration of competence in nursing.
Objectives	The student is able to: • master the key knowledge and skills required for surgical nursing, be able to make decisions and work independently as a surgical nurse; • plan, implement and evaluate surgical nursing ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information; • work as a part of the surgical team, as a responsible nurse in the work unit, and as a coordinator of overall care for a client; • work in interprofessional teams as an expert in nursing care; and • evaluate and develop personal skills and professional action in a goal-oriented manner.
Content	• Key concepts related to perioperative nursing- scope of practice, duties and responsibilities, use of technology in surgical care • Nursing documentation and report • Evidence-based practice in surgical nursing • Nursing interventions in surgical nursing care • Health teaching plan for patients with complex health alterations • Multidisciplinary teamwork in patient's surgical nursing care plan

Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility. It is worthwhile to find out in advance what educational and skills requirements employers have defined for nurses in different work communities. You can also choose to study surgical nursing as an elective course. The prerequisites also apply to elective courses.
