Prerequisites Level I studies are either in progress or have been completed without any deficits.
Objectives Medical Nursing:

The student is able to:

• discuss the factors that affect body fluid homeostasis;
• identify non-invasive methods for monitoring cardiac rhythm required in patient care;
• explain the types of standard and transmission-based precautions;
• understand the process of blood transfusion therapy, including procedures, implications, and complications;
• acquire knowledge of appropriate nursing interventions for medical patients; and
• describe the pharmacology of analgesics and antimicrobial medications.

Evidence-based Practice:

The student is able to:

• recognize the role of evidence-based practice in the decision-making process in nursing;
• develop skills in seeking information necessary for evidence-based research work;
• acquire competence in documentation needed in nursing care plans according to the Finnish Care Classification System (FinCC);
• demonstrate critical thinking skills in the analysis of evidence-based articles;
• collaborate effectively using the best available evidence-based data;
• produce text based on various sources and understand the significance of ethical writing and referencing.
Content The student will learn the following concepts.

Part I. Medical Nursing (5 ECTS)

Multidisciplinary Approach

• Medical Lectures: Fluids, Electrolytes, Acid-Base Balance, and Intravenous Therapy, Types of Arrhythmias, Electrocardiogram and its interpretation
• Pharmacology: Antimicrobial and Analgesic Medications

Nursing

• Types of Electrocardiogram: 12-lead ECG, Basic Continuous ECG, Holter-tape ECG, and Exercise ECG
• Types of Precaution Categories for Infection Prevention and Control

• Nursing documentation using the Finnish Care Classification System (4.0)
• Information-seeking using scientific databases
• Foundations of Nursing Science
• Nursing Care Plan and Nursing Process
• Writing skills: effective sentences, paraphrasing, referencing, argumentation, metatext.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Written examination and oral presentations
Execution methods In the domain of Medical Nursing, the course will be executed through a combined approach of theoretical and skills development. Theoretical aspects will be conducted through a hybrid lecture format coupled with opportunities for international collaborative engagement. Complementary to this, the skills practice will encompass practices such as public speaking, debates, and completion of written assignments, all underscored by the application of critical thinking methodologies.
Materials Official Book: Hinkle, Janice L., and Kerry H. Cheever. Brunner & Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-surgical Nursing. Edition 13. Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014.

Supplemental evidence-based materials will be provided in the online learning environment.
