ON00DU79 Fundamentals of Nursing Care (5 cr)
Prerequisites No prerequisites for enrollment.
Objectives The student is able to:

• understand, practice, and apply the principles of basic infection prevention control measures, including hand hygiene and aseptic techniques;
• identify vital signs and apply the concepts of anatomy and physiology in measuring them;
• describe the concepts of the basics of diagnostic tests to help support the patient’s function;
• understand the principles of work ergonomics and the use of assistive devices in patient transfer to promote patient safety;
• create a nursing care plan using the nursing process;
• apply evidence-based data to support the basic nursing care plan of the patient and family members involved in the plan of care;
• practice the fundamentals of first aid;
• describe the concepts of post-mortem care;
• understand the main principles of basic specimen collection; and
• recommend the nutritional needs of an adult and elderly client and perform basic health promotional activities.

Part II: Nursing in Finland (Integration Part with tutor teacher)

The student is able to:

• understand work collegiality and work culture in the Finnish context;
• recognize cultural differences in a multicultural and multiprofessional environment;
• identify the Finnish social and healthcare system;
• interpret the Finnish code of ethics for nurses;
• describe the general duties and responsibilities of a Registered Nurse in Finland;
• realize opportunities in the Finnish labor markets both in primary health care and specialized medical care.

Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods The assessment includes a written examination and skills check.
Execution methods The course is conducted in a hybrid format, incorporating online teaching, independent study, group discussions, laboratory sessions, and a final examination.

A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk) using a numerical scale of 0-5. Areas of assessment include:

4. Responsibility
