ON00DV59 Clinical Practicum in Medical-Surgical Nursing (8 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives The student is able to:

• master the key knowledge and skills required for medical-surgical nursing and make decisions and tasks independently as a nurse;
• plan, implement and evaluate medical-surgical nursing tasks ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information;
• apply knowledge of different diseases in the care of the medical-surgical patient;
• manage the drug and fluid management of a medical-surgical patient in accordance with the principles of infection control and safety;
• communicate appropriately about the different stages of the care process;
• apply different methods of counselling in a client/patient-oriented manner;
• demonstrate sufficient communication skills to medical-surgical patients professionally;
• justify actions and care decisions based on evidence-based information;
• follows the ethical guidelines and principles of nursing and acts as a responsible member of the nursing team and community;
• perform tasks in the work unit as a nurse-in-charge and as a coordinator of the overall care of the client/patient and as a medical care expert in multidisciplinary teams with the guidance of the clinical mentor; and
• analyse personal skills and development and contribute to the development in the clinical practice.

Evaluation Criteria

pass/fail
A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility. Detailed information on the assessment is attached.


PASS

The student:

• achieves the objectives of the clinical practicum and as assessed by the clinical mentor in the clinical placement(s);
• performs clinical nursing tasks safely and independently under the supervision of the clinical mentor;
• participates in pre-deployment orientation(s), meetings with the clinical supervisor, collaborative activities(as needed) and adheres to the standards of nursing care ethically and with due diligence;
• submits the required assignments according to the agreements with the clinical supervisors and standards set by the higher education provider; and
• completes the curriculum's required number of hours in accordance with national legislation and EU Directive.

FAIL

The student:

• endangers the patient's safety resulting in possible harm or due to missed, rationed or unfinished nursing care;
• performs nursing tasks unethically;
• does not demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies required at the clinical practicum; and
• does not follow professional conduct (neglecting tasks, being impolite, disobedient, and disrespectful with patients and colleagues).

In case of accreditation, the student is given guidance for the accreditation process by the Head of the Degree Programme/teacher responsible for the option, campus study counsellors, teacher tutor, or the teacher of the course. In addition, the staff of Academic Affairs can help the student with the application.
