Description


ON00DV51 Clinical Practicum in Mental Health and Addiction Nursing (6 cr)
Prerequisites Theoretical parts are passed without deficits.
Objectives The student:

• is active in the client care process, reflecting on personal actions;
• uses appropriate methods of helping to increase the client's involvement and resources;
• is guided by dialogical interaction and ethical principles of nursing;
• will administer medication safely, taking into account the effects and side effects;
• guides the client in questions related to medication;
• works in a multidisciplinary team and reflects on personal activities as a member of the team;
• will be familiar with mental health and substance abuse legislation and its relevance to the activities of the trainee unit;
• will evaluate personal activities on the basis of evidence-based research, experience with clients and their relatives, and feedback from staff;
• will analyse and develop the quality of mental health and substance abuse care based on evidence;
• will be able to promote well-being and safety at work and develop good practices in this area;
• will be able to work in accordance with the emergency plan of the training unit; and
• assess their own professional competence.
Content • Nursing process in mental health and abuse nursing
• Psychiatric illnesses and their diagnostic criteria as well as medication
• Dialogic and the care based on the client's experiences
• The laws of mental health and abuse nursing
• Participation as a member of a multidisciplinary team
• Documentation and information
• Evidence based knowledge concerning mental health and abuse nursing including development, quality, and management
• Self evaluation and reflection as well as work guidance
• Safety and welfare of the work on mental health and addiction nursing

Evaluation Criteria

pass/fail
A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility. Detailed information on the assessment is attached.


PASS

The student:

• achieves the objectives of the clinical practicum and as assessed by the clinical mentor in the clinical placement(s);
• performs clinical nursing tasks safely and independently under the supervision of the clinical mentor;
• participates in pre-deployment orientation(s), meetings with the clinical supervisor, collaborative activities(as needed) and adheres to the standards of nursing care ethically and with due diligence;
• submits the required assignments according to the agreements with the clinical supervisors and standards set by the higher education provider; and
• completes the curriculum's required number of hours in accordance with national legislation and EU Directive.

FAIL

The student:

• endangers the patient's safety resulting in possible harm or due to missed, rationed or unfinished nursing care;
• performs nursing tasks unethically;
• does not demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies required at the clinical practicum; and
• does not follow professional conduct (neglecting tasks, being impolite, disobedient, and disrespectful with patients and colleagues).

Further Information In case of accreditation, the student is given guidance for the accreditation process by the Head of the Degree Programme/teacher responsible for the option, campus study counsellors, teacher tutor, or the teacher of the course. In addition, the staff of Academic Affairs can help the student with the application.
