Description


ON00DV15 Gerontological Nursing (5 cr)
Prerequisites Level I and Level II studies are completed without deficits or has passed 140 ECTS studies in the Degree Programme in Nursing including studies and practical training in person-centred elderly care.
Objectives The student is able to:

• demonstrate the key knowledge and skills required for gerontological nursing work, make evidence-based decision making and perform nursing tasks independently under supervision;
• collaborate with elderly client(s)/patient(s) and their family members or next of kin to promote healthy ageing, optimal functioning, and quality of life;
• plan, implement and evaluate gerontological client's/patient's nursing ethically and safely using reliable evidence-based information;
• work as a member of the interprofessional gerontological team using the nursing process;
• evaluate and develop personal and professional skills and competencies in a goal-oriented manner.
Content • Individual and social challenges of health promotion among the elderly; preventive nursing; recovery support and clinical nursing
• National programmes and recommendations
• Nurses' proficiency in the promotion of well-being among the elderly in multiprofessional and multidisciplinary networks
• Process of gerontological nursing practises, services and recording
• Counselling, education, creative activities and clinical skills in gerontological nursing
• Medical technology
• Current, special issues in gerontological nursing

A student is assessed according to the Assessment Framework of the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oamk). Areas of assessment include 1. professional knowledge base and information seeking; 2. professional skill, activity, and target of activity; 3. group work skills and leadership; and 4. responsibility.

Further Information Students choose their advanced studies in nursing according to their own career plans. It is worthwhile to find out in advance what educational and skills requirements employers have defined for nurses in different work communities.

A course in gerontological nursing (5 credits) can also be chosen as an elective.

Information on the selection process and enrolment for advanced studies will be provided in advance.
