KB00BP28 Introduction to Business Development (10 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives The student is able to understand the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and skills related to developing a business. The student is familiar with Finnish Business and HR legislation, as well as issues related to HRM function in a company.

Areas of Competence:

Entrepreneurship and Business Development:
Student knows the main definitions and contents. He knows the main contents of the entrepreneurship processes: from business idea to new venture creation and how to develop the business further. Student is able to scan, recognize and model and also to evaluate business opportunities especially in her own field. He has the knowledge to build support networks for new venture creation. Student explores information of the entrepreneur as a career. Student is familiar with principles related to Change Management in business development.

Finnish Business and HR Legislation:
The student is capable to understand the importance of the legal environment when planning and developing business. The student understands the general areas of the Finnish legal system and the main features of the business law. The student obtains the skill to compare different kinds of company forms and is capable to explain the main principles of establishing an enterprise. The student is capable to explain the main rules of the decision-making and representation in different sorts of company. The student understands the responsibility of decision-making. The student recognizes the basic principles of labor law and also the rights and responsibilities of the employer and the employee. He or she is also capable to explain the main principles of provisions in marketing. The student learns how to apply the law of the Promissory Notes Act and the Act on Guarantees and Third Party Pledges in practice. The student is capable to explain the principles of the general contract law and the principles of the law of the person. The student recognizes the different types of contracts and is capable to compare the applicability to different real life situations. The student is capable to explain the principles of the law of damages.

Human Resource Management (HRM):
The student is familiar with the basic functions of human resource management and understands the strategic role of HRM. Students can perform some basic HRM tasks. Student knows the concept and role of a work community.
Content Areas of Competence:

Entrepreneurship and Business Development:
Definitions of entrepreneurship, entrepreneur minded behaviour, meaning of entrepreneurship in society, a business idea/an invention to new venture creation: business opportunity, business model, business plan, recognition of a business opportunity, evaluation, development, representation and also taking advantage of profitable business opportunity. Entrepreneur capabilities. Support networks of entrepreneurship and key stakeholders. Support of OUAS for new venture creation. Business Kitchen/business incubator visit or expert lectures of these subjects. Change Management (leadership in change) in business development.

Finnish Business and HR Legislation:
Legal terminology in the context of the Finnish legal system and an overview of the company law, labor law and marketing law, the Partnerships Act, the Companies Act, Cooperatives Act, Employment Contracts Act, the Unfair Business Practices Act.

Human Resource Management (HRM):
Strategic HRM, job analysis and design, human resource planning, recruitment and selection, performance appraisal, training and development, compensation and rewards, international human resource management. Work community skills.
