KB00BP04 Orientation to Studies (10 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives The student knows what is required to successfully pursue his Degree studies at the UAS, is able to plan his career aspirations and to work in a community of other students and staff. The student can do research, is familiar with the resources provided by the Library, as well as is able to utilize various Computer and IT tools.

Areas of Competence:

Orientation to Studies and Career Planning: Student knows the principles of being a member of the University of Applied Sciences society and is able to use the possibilities and services provided by the study environment to support his studying. Student knows the fundamentals and requirements of his degree programme and is able to plan and follow the progress of his studies to graduate in planned duration of studies. Student knows how to analyze and develop his study skills. The students can use groups and teams in multidisciplinary and cross-cultural work community. Student is able to create his Personal Study Plan (excel, Computer Skills) and plan his future career accordingly. The students can set goals and analyze their own actions (in studies etc.) to plan their future work careers.

Research and Development Work (incl. Library): Student knows how to utilize Library’s information systems and services for information retrieval. Student knows how to use the information arising from the research and development work within his own profession and is familiar with the methods and information sources needed. Student is capable of reporting and communicating of a research and development project (essentials). Student knows about Qualitative research and methods.

Computer Skills: The student can use office programs and networks efficiently in his/her studies.
Content Areas of Competence:

Orientation to Studies and Career Planning: Study and welfare support services. Grouping. Information systems and services and information and technical communication skills. Getting to know with the student's study field. Learning skills and knowledge. Student's rights and responsibilities and studying norms and rules. International services and possibilities to develop international skills. Personal study plan. Professional self-awareness, career options and planning. Employment options and models.

Research and Development Work (incl. Library): Research and development work within a professional context; methods and information sources; Qualitative research methods, communications in research and development, source criticism. Library information systems and services

Computer Skills: School's network environment, word processing, document layout, creating presentations, spreadsheets excel, browsers, e-mail, basics of computing and data security.
