OB00ED16 Diagnostic Histopathology and Cytology, Practical Training (4 cr)
Prerequisites Not applicable
Objectives The student will be able to perform the tissue transport process and basic staining of histological specimens and assess their microscopic quality. The student will be able to perform Cytotek-specimen and basic Papanicolau-staining of cytological specimens. The student identifies the microscopic structures of the most common tissue types and distinguish normal from pathological findings in gynecological bulk samples.

The practical part of the course is carried out in the laboratory facilities of the unit.
Content Content: sampling in pathology, the main methods of diagnostic histopathology and cytology laboratory work, normal histology of tissues, the use of traditional stains in diagnosis and the basics of cytological diagnosis. Quality assurance and occupational health and safety in pathology.
The practical part of the course is carried out in the laboratory facilities of the unit.

Accomplishment methods Compulsory attendance at practical sessions.
Execution methods The practical lessons are based on the theory lessons, with the teacher supervising the practical work in the school's laboratory classroom. For example, the teacher will agree separately with the students to keep a learning diary during the week of the exercise.

Evaluation Criteria

Pass: The student participates actively and responsibly in the practical work in small group. The student performs the tissue culture and basic staining of histological specimens and assesses their microscopic quality according to the instructions. The student prepares a Cytotek preparation and stains the preparation with Papanicolau stain. Identifies the microscopic structures of the most common tissue types and distinguishes normal from pathological findings in gynecological smears. The student takes care of safety at work and recognises the importance of disposing of waste as part of the work.

Fail: The student does not participate in the practical work.
