OB00EC79 Hematology II (4 cr)
Prerequisites Hematology I
Objectives The student knows the mechanisms of anemia, malignant blood diseases and coagulation disorders, their symptoms and the main laboratory tests used in diagnosis. Students will extend their knowledge of hematological laboratory techniques and be able to assess the quality of hematological laboratory tests.

Knowledge of basic concepts of transfusion immunology and the clinically most important blood group systems. The student will be familiar with the actors and legislation related to blood transfusion. The student will know the safety requirements of blood transfusion and understand the potential adverse effects of blood transfusion. The student will know the principles of laboratory tests related to blood transfusion and the blood products used in transfusion.
Content Anemias, malignant blood diseases and coagulation disorders and the main laboratory tests used in their diagnosis. Analysis of body fluids.

Basic concepts of blood transfusion immunology, blood grouping systems, blood transfusion related laboratory tests, transfusion chain, blood products and their use, adverse reactions of transfusion and blood safety, guidelines and regulations governing transfusion activities.

The student knows the most common types of anemia and can explain their main mechanisms of origin and symptoms.
The student knows the laboratory tests used in the diagnosis of anemia.
The student will be able to name the most common malignant blood diseases and be able to outline their mechanisms and symptoms.
The student will know the most common laboratory methods used in the diagnosis of malignant blood diseases.
The student will know the basic concepts of blood transfusion.
The student will be able to identify the clinically most important blood group systems and describe the main steps in the transfusion chain.
The student will know the laboratory tests related to blood transfusion.
The student will know the main blood products and the adverse effects of transfusion.
The student understand the key factors affecting the reliability of results.
