From Open University to degree student

Students who have completed Open University of Applied Sciences studies can apply for Degree student status on the basis of their studies without participating in the normal student selection. Please note, that the studies must have been completed in a Finnish University of Applied Sciences.

When applying for Degree studies, the students must have completed

  • at least 30 ECTS credits of Open UAS studies for Bachelor's degree programmes
  • at least 15 ECTS credits of Open UAS studies for Master's degree programmes 

The students applying for Bachelor's degree programmes do not need to meet the general eligibility criteria defined in the Polytechnics Act.
The students applying for Master's degree programmes must meet the general eligibility criteria defined in the Polytechnics Act.

Admission Criteria for Bachelor programmes

You do not need to meet the general eligibility criteria defined in the Polytechnics Act.
The admission criteria for students applying for bachelor degree programmes on the basis of Open UAS studies are as follows:

  1. You have completed at least 30 ECTS credits of Open UAS studies, which are acceptable for the degree programme you are applying into. The credits must be (fully) completed within the application period. Accredited courses are not accepted (accreditation marked in the transcript of records). Credits completed in other Finnish Open Universities of Applied Sciences are also considered if they are suitable into the applicated degree programme. 
  2. The resources of the educational department and the courses offered by the University of Applied Sciences enable admitting new students to degree programmes/study options.
  3. First selection priority is given to those applicants, who have completed the Open UAS credits (30 cr) in Oulu University of Applied Sciences. If there are more applicants than can be chosen, the applicants are ranked according to the following criteria:
     - the amount of accreditable credits to the applicated degree programme, and after this
    -  the weighted average of numerical grades.
  4. You have sufficient language skills for the language of instruction/teaching.
  5.  The so-called SORA legislation applies to education leading to a UAS degree in the fields of social services and health care, humanities and education, sports and exercise and seafaring. These fields have requirements concerning the safety of minors, patient and client safety or traffic safety which restrict student admission. In these fields, it is required that health and functional capacity of approved applicants are such that they are able to take part in the practical assignments or training relating to studies.
  6. You have delivered all required documents by the given deadline.

Admission Criteria for Master programmes

The students applying for Master's degree programmes must meet the general eligibility criteria (required base degree and work experience) defined in the Polytechnics Act. The admission criteria for students applying for master degree programmes on the basis of Open UAS studies are as follows:

  1. You have completed at least 15 ECTS credits* of Open UAS studies, which are acceptable for the degree programme you are applying into. The credits must be (fully) completed within the application period. Accredited courses are not accepted (accreditation marked in the transcript of records). Credits completed in other Finnish Open Universities of Applied Sciences are also considered if they are suitable into the applicated degree programme. 
    * The exception is the master's degrees in the field of culture, which require at least 20 credits of open university of applied sciences studies that can be credited for the degree programme you are applying into.
  2. The resources of the educational department and the courses offered by the University of Applied Sciences enable admitting new students to degree programmes/study options.
  3. First selection priority is given to those applicants, who have completed the Open UAS credits (15 cr) in Oulu University of Applied Sciences. If there are more applicants than can be chosen, the applicants are ranked according to the following criteria:
    - the amount of accreditable credits to the applicated degree programme, and after this
    - the weighted average of numerical grades.
  4. You have sufficient language skills for the language of instruction/teaching.
  5. You have delivered all required documents by the given deadline.

Applying

Online application to degree programmes on the basis of Open University studies is available during the application period at Studyinfo.
Application times:

  • studies starting during autumn period is 2.5.-16.5. (or the following working days).
  • studies starting during spring period is 1.11.-15.11. (or the following working days).

The application period starts on the first application day at 8:00 am and ends on the last day of application at 3:00 pm. After this the application & attachments cannot be accessed. The attachments required for the application are as follows:

  • a current transcript of records (if studies have been completed at Oamk, there’s no need to attach a transcript)
  • Master level applicants, submit certificates of the education and work experience

Delayed attachments will not be taken into account. The applicant can make changes to the application until the end of the application period. The student selection is based on the information that is available by the end of the application period.
Applicant can apply for two (2) available degrees, in the order of priority.

 

Application period in autumn 2023
The application period for studies beginning in January 2024 is 1st November to 15th November.

The online application form is filled out in the Studyinfo-service during the application period.

Study programmes available during the autumn 2023 application period:
Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Information Technology
Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), International Business
Master of Engineering (MEng), Data analytics and Project Management

Student Selection and Right to Appeal

The applicants will be informed of the student selection in Spring application by 15.6. and for Autumn application by 15.12. The study place must be confirmed by separately given deadline.

According to the Act 257/2015 an applicant may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in education starting during the same term. A student admitted to education leading to a UAS qualification must confirm his or her acceptance of the study place by the date given in the acceptance message. If the applicant does not confirm the acceptance of the study place by the deadline, he or she will lose it. The University of Applied Sciences must register the acceptance information without delay.

A person who has applied for admission can submit to a body of the University of Applied Sciences a written rectification request concerning the decision on student admission within 14 days of the publication of the results of student selection. When the results are announced, it must be declared how the applicant can gain information about how the grounds for the selection were applied to him or her, and how he or she can demand a rectification to the outcome of the selection. The admission results may not be changed to the detriment of any other admitted person in consequence of the rectification request. (Act 257/2015). The rectification requests will be processed according to the instructions 7.9.2020 § 76.

Study Right The right to study is granted from the beginning of the next semester. The length of study right is determined by the scope of the degree. Chosen students will receive the same amount of study right as the new degree students chosen via Joint Application.

Tuition fee

The rules of the Oamk tuition fee and scholarship system apply to a student who is admitted to Oamk in the selection of students with Open UAS studies. More information on the Oamk’s tuition fees can be found on the Bachelor's and Master's pages of the joint application.
