Objectives To be able to operate in detached house renovation?s technical design assignments.
To know the special features of detached house renovations compared to new house building.
To know the ordinary structural solutions and materials of the past, and to know their essential technical features, including damaging and ageing.
To know the refurbishment methods of the structures in new house building, the effect of house technics and to be able to apply them to planning and work assignments. To be able to formulate ordinary technical solutions in building (building?s interior and envelope) and to be able to select safe and energy-efficient solutions. To know building inventory in new house building, assessment of condition and long-range plan, and to know the forms of assessment of condition. To be able to interpret documents about buildings conditions and the effect on repair planning. To know the use of drawing markings in renovation.

The student knows the basic terminology of building components and structures, and also masters the professional vocabulary connected with renovation and refurbishment in English. They are able to present a preliminary condition survey in English.
Content Concepts and principles in refurbishment and renovation. Smaller scale building stock, methods of construction, structures, materials, systems and building regulations. Faults, damages, causes for damages and reparation in details (materials and building elements). Building physics and chemistry in renovation. Technical construction and fire regulations in refurbishment construction. Energy renovation. Technical designs of detached house renovation. Building inventory, assessment of condition, the costs of renovation and long-range plan. The forms of an assessment of condition, contents and methods in planning and decision-making process. Technical renovation plans for a detached house.

The course includes integrated English language studies (2 credit points). The students get acquainted with the terminology and professional vocabulary in question. They compile written and oral presentations about renovation in general and/or renovation targets in English.
