SU00DN50 Advanced Practice in Cariological Care (5 cr)
Prerequisites The previous training must have been successfully completed.
Objectives PART 1. GENERAL OF SALIVA TESTS AND RESIN INFILTRATION (1 ECTS)
GENERAL TESTS OF SALIVA (0,5 ECTS)
The student will be able to
- Understand the importance of saliva testing as part of a patient?s oral health self-care
- Know take the most general of saliva tests and guide the patient in taking them

RESIN INFILTRATION (0,5 ECTS)
-The student has gained the basic methods of resin infiltration in preventing and arrest caries.
-Upon completion of the course, the student has gained resin infiltration techniques in approximal and front sides in the tooth.
THIS PART IS ONLY FOR FINNISH STUDENTS

PART 2. DENTAL SEALANTS (2 ECTS)
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to
- know how to control caries at individual level
- know the basic methods of caries control
- applicate pit and fissure sealants

PART 3. METHODS OF CARIOLOGICAL CARE (2 ECTS)
The student deepens his/her knowledge of the etiology of caries and cariological treatment. After these studies student has gained knowledge and practice of the cariological tasks of a dental hygienist as well as the cariological treatment he/she will be responsible for. The student familiarizes him/herself with the basics of aesthetic dental care. This clinical practice takes place in Dentopolis.

GENERAL TESTS OF SALIVA (0,5 ECTS)
Common recommendations, the importance of saliva testing. Caries control at individual level.
RESIN INFILTRATION (0,5 ECTS)
Basics and methods of resin infiltration, materials in resin infiltration, principals and exercises of resin infiltration

PART 2. DENTAL SEALANTS (2 ECTS) Common recommendations, sealant materials, the individual steps of the sealing process. Caries control at individual level.

PART 3. METHODS OF CARIOLOGICAL CARE (2 ECTS) Principals, exercises and other tasks concerning commonly used cariological materials, instruments and methods.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Part 1. Lectures integrated to hands-on training and group work.

Part 3. Working in pairs or small groups, individual tasks. Timetable and splitting of the groups will be available in Lukkarikone and Moodle.

PART 1. GENERAL OF SALIVA TESTS AND RESIN INFILTRATION (1 ECTS)
GENERAL OF SALIVA TESTS (0,5 ECTS)
Passed: knows how to perform the most common saliva tests on patients. Can interpret the results of saliva tests and identify the factors associated with them.
Fail: The student does not meet the criteria for acceptable performance.

RESIINI-INFILTRAATIO (0,5 ECTS)
Passed: Knowledge of the mechanism of action of resin infiltration in the prevention and treatment of caries. Master the technique of performing resin infiltration on both interdental and free/free surfaces.
Fail: The student does not meet the assessment criteria for acceptable performance.


PART 2. DENTAL SEALANTS (2 ECTS)
Pass: Identify the dental sealant materials and the stages of tooth coating. Can do perform the dental sealant according to recommendations.
Fail: The student does not meet the assessment criteria for acceptable performance.

PART 3. METHODS OF CARIOLOGICAL CARE (2 ECTS)
Grading scale pass/fail. Assessment of the course is based on the active participation and learning outcomes of the student. Mandatory practice with several fillings, tasks mainly considered to be relevant duties of dental hygienist. Approved practical exercises and written tasks.

Part 1. Consists of practical training
Part 2. Course is provided in collaboration with University of Oulu. 1.rd dental hygienist students (Only for Finnish students) and 3.rd year dental students (1 ECTS)
Part 3. Consists of practical exercises and written tasks on the treatment of caries and dental hard tissue. Teacher Meeri Oinonen.
