SU00DB84 Advanced Practice in Cariological Care (4 cr)
Prerequisites Exchange student may participate on Part 1. DENTAL SEALANTS (2 ECTS)
Objectives Part 1. DENTAL SEALANTS (2 ECTS)
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to
- know how to control caries at individual level
- know the basic methods of caries control
- applicate pit and fissure sealants

Part. 2 METHODS OF CARIOLOGICAL CARE (2 ECTS)
The student deepens his/her knowledge of the etiology of caries and cariological treatment. After these studies student has gained knowledge and practice of the cariological tasks of a dental hygienist as well as the cariological treatment he/she will be responsible for. The student familiarizes him/herself with the basics of aesthetic dental care and learns how to utilize the computer program / application used in Dentopolis. This clinical practice takes place in Dentopolis.
Content Part 1. DENTAL SEALANTS (2 ECTS) Common recommendations, sealant materials, the individual steps of the sealing process. Caries control at individual level.

Part 2. METHODS OF CARIOLOGICAL CARE (2 ECTS) Principals, exercises and other tasks of commonly used cariological materials, instruments and methods.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Part 1. DENTAL SEALANTS (2 ECTS)
Face-to-face teaching; lectures and hands-on training. Hands-on-training 100 % attendance required.
Part 2. METHODS OF CARIOLOGICAL CARE (2 ECTS)
Practical training in pairs, integrated to theoretical course of cariology. This part of practical training is obligatory.
Execution methods Part 1. Lectures integrated to hands-on training and group work.
Part 2. Working in pairs or small groups, individual tasks. Timetable and splitting of the groups will be available in Lukkarikone and Moodle.

Part 1. The assessment of the course is based on the learning outcomes of the course.

Part 1. Course is provided in collaboration with University of Oulu. 1.rd dental hygienist students and 3.rd year dental students (1 ECTS)
Part 2. Consists of practical training and written tasks dealing with the treatment of caries. Contact person / teacher Meeri Oinonen.
