ON00DU95 Essentials of Perioperative Nursing (4 cr)
Prerequisites Level I studies are passed without deficits.
Objectives The student is able to:

? describe the three phases of perioperative nursing;
? understand the wound healing process and its determinants, and be able to plan, implement and evaluate wound care;
? define the role of each member of the surgical team;
? understand radiation safety in nursing;
? discuss the duties and responsibilities of a perioperative nurse using the nursing process;
? identify the essential surgical conditions and their etiological causes, prevalence, symptoms, findings, and medical treatment;
? identify common surgical methods performed in the operating theatre and the corresponding surgical instruments used; and
? discuss patient-based outcomes in the perioperative process.

? understand the importance of pathophysiology in the context of surgical nursing;
? plan, implement and evaluate the drug, nutritional, and fluid therapy and transfusion;
? understand the wound healing process and its determinants, and be able to plan, implement and evaluate wound care;
? provide guidance to the client in perioperative care;
? use the necessary examination and treatment technology safely;
? understand the importance of radiation safety in nursing; and
? plan and implement infection control and understand the microbiological principles involved.
