AT00CV90 Orientation Studies in Folk Dance and Couple Dance (5 cr)
Prerequisites Preliminary skills fof the required objectives of the course.
Objectives I act responsibly in developing the capacity of my bodily skills. I can dance the most commonly existing Finnish social couple dances, such as: foxtrot, waltz, tango, humppa, fusku, bugg, cha cha, rumba-bolero and salsa. I dance in relation to played music in the roles of leader and follower.
I can dance typical Finnish folk dance genres, such as: song and circle dances, dance games, quadrille and minuet. I dance folk dance based couple dances in the roles of leader and follower, such as: scottishe, jenkka, mazurka, waltz, polska and polka.
I can tell about the core phenomena, teaching culture and methods of Finnish social dance and folk dance cultures. I evaluate my skills and development needs in relation to the cultural priciples of folk dance and social dance.
Content The basics of kinesthetic empathy and physical interaction, dancing in the community, basic manifestations of folk dance and ballroom dance styles, the relationship between dance and music as well as the spatial and kinesthetic orientations of social dances. Studying the cultures of folk dance and social dance. Exploring the pedagogy of social dance styles.
Recommended optional programme components If necessary, the student advisor will recommend optional programme components for each student based on their individual study plan.
Accomplishment methods Dance studio teaching and competence demonstration.

The student has taken overall responsibility for developing his or her dance skills. The motivation for the subject is noticeable. The student master the basics of dance both as a leader and as a follower. The student dances according to the style of the material and recognizes the movement management factors that are part of the dance. The control of the rhythm of the music is noticeable from the movements. One is able to use the terminology of dance and to tell about the core phenomena, teaching culture and methods of Finnish folk dance and Finnish social ballroom dance culture. The student is able to act responsibly in different learning situations and environments, taking into account others. The student assesses competence and development needs in relation to the cultures of folk dance and social dance.
